Immigrating to a new country can be challenging, confusing and intimidating. You will be thrilled and excited, as well, since you have likely dreamed of this for a long time, and it is now all coming together. And you should feel that way. But you also need to consider the challenges and prepare.

With that in mind, here are some helpful tips for prospective new immigrants in the United States:

  • Remember that this process can be confusing, it can take time and there can be delays. Anticipate those delays and be ready for them. This happens to everyone, and it does not mean you won’t be able to immigrate.
  • Think about life after you arrive. What type of visa do you have and what does that mean for your future? If you have a work visa, how fast do you need to start working? What happens if you lose your job? Look into questions like these in advance so that you know where you stand and what to do.
  • Learn what obligations you have. A citizen may be able to move to a new address whenever they want, for example, but many immigrants have to tell USCIS about a new address. You don’t want to make any minor mistakes with paperwork that could put your status in jeopardy.
  • Always keep your paperwork handy. This includes applications, visas, identification cards and the like. You may need to use them for various purposes and you must know where they are at all times.

This process can be complex, and you have your entire future at stake. Be sure you know what legal rights and options you have the entire time.
